martinh13 - 2nd - 14/Mar/15 with Tim Day, Chris

A second attempt on this, having retreated from it after a couple of pitches a few years ago (not logged). I note the tat and 'biner used for the ab off was still at the "cave" belay, although the cave was so banked out this time you wouldn't know it was there, and retrieving the gear would have been awkward. Anyway at least we got to the top this time, although I'm not sure by what route ultimately: as on the previous attempt, it was completely opaque to us how to dogleg back above the cave (all looked very hard), and following the line of least resistance (delicate traverse left from the cave, then up) took us up some more short chimneys (finding another in-situ peg gave us some confidence we were on some sort of route) and onto a vague ridge between Amphitheatre Route's gully on the left (massively corniced) and what was clearly Pinnacle Gully on the right (but we thought inaccessible from where we now were). Very steep, some big run-outs between rare gear placements. Some ice, but hollow and didn't have a lot of faith in the few screws placed. We certainly finished up on top of Amphitheatre Buttress (but must surely have somehow bypassed whatever crux makes that a V,5, unless it was so banked out we didn't notice). I note the UKC log for Amphitheatre Route has a couple of comments: "Started up Pinnacle Gully 1 and missed the traverse back right." and "Lost..." so it's not just us.

Took a more direct start out of Raeburns up a wee section of ice and a flash pump popped me off. Clean ascent after that. Found the short section before a belay pretty desperate for a III, under fatter conditions it would have been easier.

A fine day out. Mostly just a romp up snow slopes. Got a good view of the congestion in Raeburn's.
