Rockfax Description
This is another excellent via ferrata located directly opposite the more famous Michielli Strobel. The route traverses the isolated and perfectly formed peak of Col Rosa, that has commanding views of the surrounding area. The approach to the start of the wire is long and strenuous, as is the descent. The ferrata itself is fairly short and stiff but has excellent climbing. The long approach does help keep the crowds away and is in itself very pleasant with fantastic views down into the Val di Fanes and across to the three Tofanas.
Approach - From Cortina, take the SS51 north in the direction of Dobbiaco. After 4km, just before you reach the village of Fiames, take the small left turning signed to 'Camping Olympia'. Park just after crossing the bridge in the spaces available outside the campsite, opposite a small park. Be careful not to obstruct the entrance to the campsite itself.
From the car park, take the large path 417 which runs parallel to the campsite. Follow the undulating track for 1km before turning left onto path 408 which begins zig-zagging steeply uphill. After roughly 1 hour 15 mins you reach a crossroads at Passo Posporcora. Take the small path on the right, signed to the via ferrata, which continues steeply uphill in a northerly direction. After several minutes the path breaks out of the trees and you get splendid views across to the Tofanas and down the deep Fanes Valley. Passing numerous war remains and gun emplacements the path switches back numerous times with small sections of cable for protection. The path finally contours under the southwest flank of Col Rosa passing a plaque to the start of the via ferrata on the right.
VF - The wire begins fairly steeply and is quite challenging. After a time you reach a fantastic arete and traverse in an excellent position. Continue up a second blunt arete followed be easier ground until you reach a wide shrub-covered shoulder just beneath the main summit of Col Rosa. Follow a good path directly ahead that leads to a series of stemples. Climb these to the top of the route. The summit is 10m or so to your right and marked with a large cross. Whilst enjoying the superb 360 degree views don't forget to fill in the summit book.
Descent - Follow path 447 down the north flank of Col Rosa. After 10 minutes or so of descent the path swings sharply east and passes through some old war time buildings. Take care not to continue going down too far north as you end up in no man's land. The track continues zig-zagging steeply downhill until it reaches the 417 track again. Follow this southwards back to the campsite. © Rockfax
