In condition, though probably harder than the standard - rocks were heavily rimed, the gear was sparse (having only 1 stubby screw didn't help...) and lots of digging needed, and the neve and ice were mostly not quite as good as ideal. Weather was like 4-seasons - from sunshine in the morning to spindrift whiteout in the late afternoon. It took 8 hours. Alt-Leads with Helen; The pair of Rob and Steve was climbing behind or sometimes before us (Steve's first proper Scottish winter climb completed). Setting off somewhere below the initial slow slope, Helen lead P1 (60m; ice&snow; up to the slow slope), P3 (50m; snow), P5 (70m; snow), P7 (50m; snow), Masa did P2 (90m; snow), P4 (70m; mixed, snow and ice), P6 (100m; all; passing Tough-Brown Variant(?) and 40ft-corner while moving together). The guidebook length is 300 metres, though...

Traverse across and up to the first platform felt very exposed. Roped up half way across and led blocks of two pitches each, which worked well once we got into a rhythm. Bypassed a bone dry Mantrap by climbing a gully on the right. Rach led the bold 40 foot corner, which was thinly iced.

Did it last summer, really glad to have done it this winter too. Moved together until a couple pitches below the mantrap. We cut too high up from the starting traverse along the snow ledge, and missed the first, and maybe the second platform. This is my recollection...
p1: broken chimney
p2: continue up broken ledges to snowy platform
p3: traverse left, then straight up short couloir with blocks in the middle, exit left to hanging stance
p4: traverse back up and right across a snowfield to rejoin the ridge.
(was there a pitch here?)
move right under a head wall into a little scoop. belay.
p5: move round right into a rock corner to make two steps-up
p6: move left and up again on the ridge (I think) to the mantrap.
p7: Aid up and over the mantrap
p8: move round right into the snowy corner and climb to the top (exit slightly right)
p9: long snow pitch to the short ice hump at the summit.
Get the head down and make (carefully) for the bivi hut with aid of compass and sound map reading skills.

Direct lower version was excellent. Just made it to hanging belay as rope ran out,
Paul Clarke - 1975 with FMC
Did not finish because of late late start and encroaching bad weather.
