About a foot of soft snow on top of more solid snow ice. Pitched from corner of buttress below the traverse to make six runouts to the small soft cornice.

Moved freely up the gulley then Katie lead across to the cavey thing without any gear or belay gear so good thing she likes a traverse! I lead second pitch up the steep-ish ice was really nice route felt uber confident; didn't manage trig belay sadly...

Relatively good ice. First grade 3 lead for me! exciting and terrifying stuff! Accidentally sent Jake up the final pitch of Indicator right wall, which he absolutely smashed. However, Rope ran out as he was going through the cornice at the top despite trying to notify him that rope was running short. After quickly deconstructing belay scarpered over to the first placement of gear and set up another belay. When I was finally ready to climb and had heard 'on belay, climb when ready' I started climbing to find that the rope was not been taken in. After shouting take until my voice ran horse, eventually I see the rope rising. When i got to the top I understood the problem! About 3 metres of rope was under snow, plenty of friction to make taking in that much harder. Moral, work on communication and read the guidebook.

Got in there just before everything got warm around new years. Route was lean enough to provide interest throughout, but mostly on decent ice, some of the less steep sections seemed a bit hollow. Broke trail from the approach to point 5/observatory ridge area onwards to indicator wall and then up the route. Beautiful atmospheric day - light cloud around the crag a lot of the time but occasionally affording glimpses down onto Tower Ridge and out over the Great Glen.

Crux was relatively straight forward, not a lot of rock protection, used mostly screws and a dead man and a snow stake. BEWARE OF THE APPROACH! this is not mentioned in any guide book, however, the approach traverse needs to be pitched from the earliest rock belay as it would be extremely unwise to solo this given the seriousness of the situation.

with Peter Berwick
