βeta: In the BMC Froggatt to Black Rocks guide (2010) Straight and Narrow is just described as the left arete throughout, not indicating which side is climbed. But I take it to be Browns Eliminate direct which is not named in the guide. This caused some confusion and when Rockfax published their 2015 guide they included Straight and Narrow but described it as the arete on its left hand side throughout in addition to putting Brown's Eliminate Direct in the guide described as being the arete but on the right hand side throughout. In the Current 2022 guide they have caused further confusion by saying Brown Eliminate Direct is also known as Straight and Narrow and climbed on the LHS. It has always been climbed on the RHS! Climbing it on the LHS the whole way would be harder than E3. The Name Straight and Narrow may have come from the 1991 guide where it is described as the direct start before joining Brown's (1965-1978). However the previous edition of the guide Derwent Gritstone (1985) mentions "For the more technically minded the arete provides a direct start which may be followed in its entirety - E3 5c" no name is given.

βeta: Did this as a second the other day. The first 2-3 steps off the ledge are ok (and reversible) but the move to get the good foot involves a tough, tenuous smear. Probably is a 5c move, though a hard one and probably E3 though, again, a hard one. The ledge bounce is a nasty certainty though...

βeta: Lower arete then BE excellent, easyish E3 5c (unprotected low crux, great line). Top arete looks OK, but very precarious bouldery moves (6a) 3-4m above gear, with nasty collision with ledge likely if you muff it - given the widely differing grade votes, comments from others who've done it?

βeta: Nice moves to the arete, I think finishing up BE is a better route...
