A bit bare; powdery snow with the boulders bare. II seems a bit harsh in those conditions.

Good first winter route, squeeze through chock-stones at the start.

This looked ok from the bottom but there turned out to be a lot of loose powder, which was very unpleasant! With a bit more, consolidated, snow this would be very good. Turf was frozen, though. Definitely harder than II in current conditions and the guidebook was not lying about awkward moves at the start and middle!

By the through route start. Tricky little step half way.

Great climb, done in 2 pitches, impressive bridging from willis on the first rocky step!

Found this one much harder than Chockstone Gully. It took me embarrassingly long though until I realized I have to go through the hole in the back.

Not ideal conditions. Nice day but snow was thin and turf not completely frozen. Tough start over first boulder. Novice 'threaded the needle' to get over the first boulder. I led the second boulder which was quite hard as well. The rest just powdery snow. Hard given the conditions (grade 2 probably). Would be good (but easy) if lots of consolidated snow. Had originally started up Maclays crack but bailed due to no frozen turf.

lovely climb, my first winter route.

Very hard as not enough snow/ice at the start.

First grade II for Laurence. Unfortunately the initial wall was thin, and I had to use 2 axes (one of them being just a walking axe, which I regretted) and torquing... Grade III/IV in this condition. Laurence had a massive struggle there in seconding.

thin conditions more like a grade three than a 2

Very thin at the moment, the turf was not frozen and not enough snow, still got up it with a few curses.

Think this was the climb we did (no guidebook - just found our way up). Big boulder at the bottom - crawled through wee hole, then a good snowy gully broken by one short rocky pitch. Steep snow at the top. Good bucket-seating and awesome moving together through blizzard conditions to the North and Main summits, on which we were rewarded with sunshine and the only views of the day.
