UKC

350m, 11 pitches. The most famous and classic hard free route in Zion, with a controversial history that affected the attitude to free climbing in the canyon for many years. After four entry pitches, the route enters a huge corner and follows an immaculate crack system the full height of the buttress. Sustained laybacking and off-finger jamming are the main keys to success, but there is also some tricky face climbing and a couple of strenuous flares.

The route has become easier over the years due to the placing and removal of gear (and will probably keep getting easier), with the 'crux' layback pitch widening to accommodate fingers in places. No individual pitch is now reckoned harder than 5.12b.

Peter Croft & Johnny Woodward (FFA) 1992.
