Fantastic route, fabulous weather, very polished start but handholds and footholds a plenty. Very exposed in places and felt high - you can see the isle of man whilst belaying! Scramble over Westmoreland Crags to Great Gable summit also a little hairy. Long walk in and you need to take all your gear with you so rucksacks required which get in the way a bit.

Much better than expected! I led the first via the arete variation (no polish at all but not much gear either) to the flat grassy bit. C led the next pitch to the foot of the groove. Then I led to the top, from the groove I moved right to twin jamming cracks - this doesn't seem to be mentioned in the guide, no idea why as it's so obvious a line.

Popular route had to wait at times, tried to overtake by climbing left up a grassy gully, not a good plan! Found it much harder than climbing the rock, no holds and everything slipping and sliding. Up climbed back to the route on slightly harder rock - possibly HVD or easy S and had to wait for other parties second to climb past anyway! Good climb, went straight down scree back to wasdale in the dark!

Big boots, rucksacks, rain (I led a very wet pitch 1!), no guidebook (it got left in the car by mistake), strong wind...all in all a fairly traditional ascent!! (Except I was able to take a fall and not die... foot slipped off something as I was about to clip a bit of gear and I landed somewhat further down on my back--thank you rucksack for cushioning it! Somehow avoided spearing myself with walking poles or otherwise breaking myself in any way!) Good day out marred only by partner vetoing a continuation route to summit Gable.

Led Zora up this one, quite nice but rather polished in places! Really quite cold! Scrambled up the steep gully to the right which is quite worrying! First pitch slab is extremely polished, horribly so. Led up with spaced gear all the way up above the steep crack in the second pitch. Ran along to the bottom of the ridge and led up this to a tricky move near the top of it. Final propper pitch, went kind of round the left of the buttress to an awkward move up a small gully thing. Made two more pitches for the final scramble just to be on the safe side! Fun sliding down the scree!

Done this twice. The first time was after we'd spent a wet lunchtime in the pub and it cleared up after closing time (back in the days when there was a closing time after lunch). We were approximately sober after the flog up the hill and had sunny dry rock. The second time was on 2 January 1987, when we'd intended to do the needle but had been beaten to it by a team who spent the day retrieving their rope after a new year's day epic. This time needle ridge was slimy and horrid with verglas at the top, which was fun in rock boots, and we got down in the dark.
