Kazbek Greater Caucasus, GEORGIA
Climbs 2 – Rocktype Volcanic tuff – Altitude 4860m a.s.l – Faces all
Mount Kazbek is the highest peak in Georgia and the 6th highest in the Caucasus range. As with Mount Elbrus it is an extinct volcano. The normal route is a Russian 2a which equates to an Alpine PD. It is very popular to climb due to its simplicity and convenient location.
Mount Kazbek is accessed via the town of Kazbegi on the Military Highway that runs to the Russian border. From here the former met station under the south side of the mountain can be reached in a day. This is used as a BC by all.
