Home to a multitude of new and unrepeated routes and not-yet-done routes. The problem is the access arrangements, but once visited, Range West is never forgotten for its unique atmosphere which brings you back to the true feeling of solitary climbing. This is one place you will never have to queue for routes.
Access is strictly controlled by the MOD, which keeps using the area as a firing range. Entry is only allowed after you have attended a briefing session (there are two run annually, in July and August); access then is only allowed at weekends running from the second briefing to early in the New Year. Access does not carry over to the next year - so you have to go to the briefing again. Despite the hassle, it is worth it.
Growing numbers of climbers using Range West would also force the MOD to open it up more - so turn up.
