Fantastic views as the quarry sits on a ridge overlooking the Vindolanda Roman Fort. It faces West getting the sun in the afternoon and evening.
The climbing is mainly on steep walls with sparse protection on most of the lines. The base of the quarry is luxurious soft grass so bouldering mats might make some of the climbs a little safer! Anchors at the top are non-existent so fixed ring bolts in the rock platform might be a good idea. The routes are the work of P. Whillance, D. Armstrong and later P. Botterill - Most routes were soloed after cleaning although there were signs of pegging previously.
Approach notes
The quarry is on access land. Approach from the limekiln car park and follow the public footpath onto Barcome Moor. Follow the path west to the Longstone. Continue through a gate and descend to a metal gate in a new fence. Go through here and follow the small path to the Quarry.
The landowner does not allow 'commercial activities' at the quarry and it should be noted that the absence of belays at the top make it unsuitable for group use.
The landowner also exercises their right to restrict access on certain days. Check the Natural England Access Maps before visiting. Also raptors may be nesting here
If you encounter nesting birds, then please leave.
No Access Issues
The quarry is on Open Access land and you have a right of access and are allowed to climb there. The landowner however, doesn't want the quarry used for climbing and may approach you. Please be polite in any subsequent discussion.
Do not use the short approach from the lane above the houses at Birkshaw. This approach crosses private land. Please use the described approach.
The landowner routinely exercises their right to 'close' the access on certain days, this would deny access to the quarry on those days. Please check the Natural England Access Maps before visiting.
