Crag features

This page refers to the climbing crag on the SE ridge of Pen Llithrig y Wrach, see the separate page for 'Summit' ascents.

A compact crag, up to 25m in height, in a stunning but poorly accessible location overlooking Llyn Cowlyd.

Three routes are currently described - 2 from the 'Ogwen and Carneddau' guidebook and one more recent route. The rock is grippy and fast drying but brittle in places. There is scope for several more routes in the low to mid grades, but gear placements look hard to find, and as the 'Carneddau' guide puts it... "it seems hardly worth the effort"!.

Approach notes

Not an easy approach - navigation isn't easy and if the path is missed the approach involves scrambling up almost vertical boggy heather!

On the OS map the crag is on the easterly bulge in the 550m contour NE of the final 'n' in Adwyon Owen. It is approached by first reaching the SW end of Llyn Cowlyd either by ascending from Helyg near Gwern Gof Isa on the A5 NW of Capel Curig, or else by driving up from Trefriw to the NE end of Llyn Cowlyd and walking along the lakeside path.  .

A vague path towards the summit rises alongside the wall towards Carreg-ar-y-rhos, and branches right below the sheep pens. Follow this above the line of rocky outcrops until the end of the crag is seen rising vertically above the edge of the surrounding heath.

The least difficult access to the base of the crag is to pass behind the top and descend on the northern side.
