Crag features

Black Tor is a beautiful, quiet spot with plenty to go at, though mostly in the higher grades. The problems are dotted around on various blocks below the indistinct edge on the west side of the valley that leads up to the crag of Laddow. It is very different to the more popular edges, and getting from problem to problem isn't on well-formed paths. Much of the ground is covered with pristine vegetation, so care needs to be taken not to disturb it. The problems are mostly east-facing, so get here in the morning if you are ofter sun, and in the afternoon if you're looking for shade. Give the area a few days to dry out after rain, especially in the winter and be prepared to brush the problems which are likely to be dirty.

Approach notes

Black Tor is a short walk from the Crowdon Youth Hostel on the A628 Woodhead Pass Road linking Sheffield to Manchester. There is a large carpark just off the road near the Youth Hostel. From the carpark, walk up the road towards the campsite. Opposite the campsite entrance is a track signed to the Youth Hostel. Head up here until you reach a bridge leading to the hostel, now turn right and follow a path for about 250m. Pass through a gate and over the stepped weir, and continue up to join The Pennine Way, following this briefly until a path leads off to the left towards Black Tor.

FYI this spot is not featured in peak bouldering 2023 book. Although it says it is
