Spielberg Rotgelebes Felsenland, GERMANY
Climbs 96 – Rocktype Microgranite – Altitude 164m a.s.l – Faces all
A former porphyry quarry with a deep lake in the Hohburger Bergen just north of Leipzig. It has a variety of sports routes up to about 15m, from UIAA 2-8+ as well as some deep water soloing routes at around UIAA 7.
The quarry is located in the town of Böhlitz, about 20km north of Leipzig, and is sign posted from the town centre (Spielberg Steinbruch). The nearest train station is Eilenburg Ost about 7km away, and there is a bus 676 which runs regularly from there to Böhlitz during weekdays, and occasionally on Saturdays - check the local transport website: lvb.de Otherwise, the road between Eilenburg and Böhlitz is flat and straight and ideal for cycling.
The quarry is private land, but members of IG-Klettern are allowed to climb there although no one checks for membership, and the main gate is usually unlocked (there is also a hole in the fence). Parts of the path around the lake is now under about 30cm of water, so bring a pair of flip-flop to wade through.
