Crag features
The highest and most impressive face in the Stirling Range. 300 m high, it leads directly to the summit plateau. Climbing is committing, often with suspect rock, limited protection (run-out), difficult route-finding, potential for weather changes, little or no means of easy escape, all after a long and difficult approach. Experienced multi-pitch climbers only. Make sure you carry enough water, food, a good first aid kit, and preferably means of emergency communication. Also take warm clothes and head torches in case of benightment.
Climbs are long multi-pitch affairs requiring good rope management. Plan for a minimum of 6 hours per ascent (full day outing including approach and descent).
The approach involves bush bashing (not on a track) over steep terrain. The descent is much easier, following the tourist trail down from the summit.
Despite the seriousness of Bluff Knoll, the climbing is good and adventurous, with exciting positions in a fantastic location.
Approach notes
Make sure to sign in the dedicated climbers' log book at the ranger station just inside the entrance to the park. Park in the Bluff Knoll tourist car park. Initially follow the tourist trail towards the summit before following a very small track up the central ridge to the base of the cliff. Follow the bast of the cliff to the left (east) (no track) until at the base of the north face.
