Crag features

A big impressive cliff that cuts virtually right across the valley and is a big part of the barrier that allowed the set of forts to be built here, in the early 1800s protecting access to Savoie. There are over seventy routes here including quite a number of multi-pitch climbs, The whole area appears virtually unknown to a UK audience - maybe this App will help broaden its appeal.

The cliff faces west and gets afternoon sun, though there are quite a few shady bays which are useful on hot days plus there are trees that also offer shade. There is some loose rock - helmets advised.

Approach notes

There are two approaches, one from below and one from above, the latter is the most popular. For the lower approach park by the signed track that runs towards the cliff on the D215G 1.7km west of its junction with the D215SE near Avrieux - a ten minute walk up.

For the upper approach, park off the road by the path up to Fort Charles-Felix (the destroyed one) which is the fourth bend uphill from Fort Victor-Emmanuel on the road to Aussois and branch right on a path that drops down, skirts the field and soon reaches toward the right edge of the cliff, in around ten minutes.
