Crag features

Fragas do Cercal is la series of buttreses located on an east-facing quart-schist escarpment at 600m asl with good views to Serra da Lousa and surrounding ranges. Topo here. There is also a photo topo on a noticeboard below the crag.

Another 1km N of here is Fraga Vermelha (S/SE Facing) which has also has some roues in the harder grades. Further info and topo available here on the FPME website.

Approach notes

From Pombal take IC8 eastwards, cross A13, and turn of at junction 18 on a a winding road that ascends to the small village of Cercal. At the entrance of Cercal there is a little Madonna shrine and a cafe just behind that welcomes climbers. A signpost here directs east along a dirt road to Fragas and then at another junction another sign points along a track towards the rocks. A cairned path turns off left with some fallen trees to negotiate that leads to the north end of the rocks where a few metal rungs and a fixed rope can be used to scramble 5m down to the base, soon reaching sector dos Namorados

Acess for Fraga Vermelha is better from the village of Ferraria de Sao Joao which is just to the north of Cercal. Take a dirt road SSE from the village for 1.2km, then locate foothpath which leads down to the base of the crag.

Access Advice

Fraga Vermelha can have nesting birds in which case it should be avoided between January and June.

The climbing in all sectors avoids vegetated areas which is important to protect the distinctive local flora that give the area its character.
