Mæl is a huge amphitheatre with a special atmosphere. You are surrounded by walls laced with ice on all sides. This should make any ice climber feel lucky to be here BUT, due to the shape of the amphitheatre, there is also some risk involved in climbing the routes here. If you are standing at the bottom, the shape of the bowl ensures that everything that falls is funnelled down to the bottom of the Gorge! It is advisable to stay out of the Gorge in unstable conditions and it is also a good idea to wear a helmet when abseiling in but, apart from these safety considerations, this is definitely a place to come for a memorable visit.
