Batu Caves is a limestone hill that has a series of caves perfect for rock climbing. It has been the centre of rock climbing in Malaysia for the past 20 years. The area gets some strong sun and the usual afternoon rain storms. With that the original routes bolted with expansion bolts are not to be trusted and some of the old rope slings need replacing. I would not like to take a fall here. There are hundreds of routes of all grades. There has been new routes put up during and after COVID. There is also revolting at Nyamuk and newer routes at White wall.
Some nice climbing on good rock (especially higher up) with slightly soft grades. It's popular roadside cragging, I met guys there who had come from as far as Singapore to climb! A little crowded but not problamatically. Seems like a friendly and fairly active climbing scene but as I didn't have my kit with my I hired a local guide and would do the same again (http://www.adenue.com/location/activity/797/Rock-Climbing-Batu-Caves). Found the taxi drivers surprisingly reluctant to take me there, so you may want to factor this in to your timing! Of course it's not far or expensive when you do find one. ow - 24/Oct/14 |
