Tonquin Valley Jasper, CANADA
Climbs ? – Rocktype Quartzite – Altitude 2500m a.s.l – Faces E
A continuous wall of mountain buttresses with a large horizontal break about mid-height. Most climbs are a full day's work plus a complex descent to the valley. Elevation given is approximate. The summits are around 3000m, the walls perhaps 500m. The climbs here are serious and little repeated. The scenery around Amethyst Lake is breathtaking.
Fly to Calgary or Edmonton then take a long drive to Jasper. The trailhead start is at Mt Edith Cavell. A 4 hours and somewhat unpleasant hike with little elevation gain. If planning to visit consider staying at the Alpine Club of Canada's Waites-Gibson hut for several days to make the most of the journey. The mosquito situation during the summer is, at times, unbearable. There are large populations of grizzly bears and moose, etc so be cautious on trails.
