Beads on Sgurr A Mhadaidh © colinthrelfall
The massive sprawling buttresses of Sgurr a' Mhadaidh (peak of the fox) present a complex and intimidating face, a world removed from the Fairy Pool crowds that are passed on approach. Loose rock and a lack of continuous lines mean that it has never become popular for rock climbing, but for the adventurous climber there is much to explore. Its northerly aspect allows for some good ice and mixed routes when conditions are favourable.
The traverse of its four tops presents one of the trickiest sections of a Cuillin ridge traverse, or of a round of Coire na Creiche, which is well worthwhile in its own right. Munro baggers tend to gain the summit (fourth top) with relative ease from An Dorus.
