Crag features

Carl Wark is the lower of the two plateaux that sit in the heart of the Burbage Valley. Its flat crest is ringed, particularly to the northwest, by ancient fortifications. A fault line divides the two plateaux and explains the difference in height that can be seen running away between Burbage North and Burbage South Edge. The crag is only a minor venue, but the routes on the Left-hand Buttress give a decent collection of easier climbs which get morning sun and afternoon shade - unusual for Eastern Grit. The Right-hand Buttress is more impressive but is nearly always in poor condition.

Approach notes

There is parking for about 5 cars at the southern end of Burbage Valley, where the Green Drive meets the main A6187 road. However, this is often full and alternatives include the parking spaces for Burbage South (next nearest), then Millstone or Burbage North, leaving a 15-20 minute walk-in.
