A cluster of large granite boulders and crags on the top of Gibraltar Peak that was a site of great significance to the indigenous Ngunnawal people long before the modern rock-climbing community took up residence. There are a series of prominant domes and leaning boulders that face in all directions and offer up blunt aretes, cracks and slabs that are up to ~30 metres tall in places. There is a mix of trad and sport options, but many of the older sport routes are very sparsely bolted and there is little to no natural protection on the slabs in particular. Rock quality is generally excellent, although there is minor exfoliation in some places.
Gibraltar Peak is a popular hiking destination offering expansive views to the east over Canberra and the rest of the ACT. Approach is from several different directions along fire trails, the two most common being from the west (park at Dalsetta Car Park in the central Tidbinbilla reserve) and from the east (park in the lay-by on Corin Road; -35.4623, 148.9691). Both are 45 minutes to an hour on foot with steady ascent. The Corin Road option has the bonus of passing The Fortress – a smaller group of granite boulders that also offers some good trad climbing.
The main trails are well maintained and easy walking. The area around the peak burned in 2020, making bush bashing to reach the base of several climbs a bit more difficult.
