Become A Gear Tester

Someone out there is going to get the chance to be a gear tester for a year. We are after someone who is active and can communicate clearly, using words, images and possibly video. They have to have a love of outdoor gear, how it works and is used, and be able to give an honest assessment of climbing and mountaineering equipment to all those who visit

Someone out there is going to get the chance to be a gear tester for a year joining the UKC gear reviewing team - Jon Griffith, Toby Archer, Es Tresidder, Will Sim, Viv Scott, Sarah Stirling, Jon Ratcliffe, Tom Hutton, Steph Karek, Dave Sarkar, Kevin Avery, Jack Geldard, Jo Horne and others - Climbers and mountaineers who are out there doing it. is rare in the UK outdoor media in that we actually do real gear reviews that you can then comment on in the gear forums - your input keeps the reviews honest.

This is how it will work. You have to answer four questions about Petzl's new TIKKA XP². The first five correct set of answers out of the hat win a TIKKA XP®².


BUT: If you win you have to agree and have the time to do a review of TIKKA XP², it must be submitted by 18th April. Your review has to be no longer than 750 words and can include photographs and if you wish video. We will specify a more comprehensive brief when we announce the winners.

The best review of the TIKKA XP² as decided by the readers of UKC (on a forum thread) and Frank Bennett, Paul Cornthwaite and Rin Colombi at Lyon Equipment will become a UKC gear reviewer for a year, you'll get a minimum of five pieces of kit to to review.

The Questions

1. The Petzl TIKKA XP² is the perfect climber's torch when using a 60 metre rope. Why?

It shines up to 60 meters at maximum level
