The Berghaus Wall in Eldon Square, Newcastle, may have to close for redevelopment of the whole Eldon Square Centre. It is currently just rumours but there does seem to be some substance to them. The proposals outlined on the Newcastle City Council site do seem to be extensive although no details are clear about what is planned for the wall and leisure centre. John Dalrymple comments, "The whole southern bit of Eldon Square is being redeveloped to put a department store in and generally revamp the area of town around the Greenmarket all the way to the Gate. I haven't managed to find out what the future for the wall is, as there's a whole leisure centre which looks as if it will be homeless."
For those not in the know, the Eldon Square Wall pre-dated the Foundry in Sheffield and was seen as a major advance in climbing walls when it was built in 1991. It is still one of the best bouldering walls around.
