Big crag on Mallorca falls down

© Mark Glaister
The super-steep main crag at S'estret (left) on Mallorca has suffered a major rockfall. A large section on the left-hand side of the crag has collapsed and the rest remains very unstable and is not currently climbable. The collapsed section is said to be around the size of a bus. For those who have been to the place this may not come as too much of a surprise; it is not that the place was loose, it was just so steep with little bulk behind the face; the power of gravity was probably always going to win this one in the end. One bonus is that the chunks of rock it has left are so big that there could well be some good new bouldering there soon.
