Banff Mountain Book Festival Winners 2006

The winners of this years Banff Mountain Book Festival have been announced. Out of the 113 entries the Grand Prize winner was The Wall, by Jeff Long, a climbing thriller. “The lean, vivid, sometimes hallucinatory prose of Long's big-wall thriller grabs readers by the harness from the opening scene and draws them relentlessly into the mind of an aging rock rat trying to out-climb a mysterious past,” says competition jury member David Leach.

Jim Perrin won the Mountain Literature award with his Climbing Essays, Audrey Salkeld, a U.K.-based journalist and mountaineering historian and a one of the judges said that, “Climbing has given Perrin his life.” Perrin is also shortlisted for this years Boardman Tasker Award to be announced at the Kendal Mountain Festival later this month.

Best Mountain Image book went to World Climbing: Images from the Edge by the Australian Simon Carter. “Carter consistently dodges the clichés of climbing photography and captures with unsettling intimacy moments of truth and beauty on the great walls of the world,” jury member David Leach says.

In the Mountain Exposition category the winner was the BMC guidebook, Burbage, Millstone and Beyond edited by David Simmonite. Jury member Audrey Salkeld says the book “seems to have learned all the lessons of what constitutes a good and easily accessible guide.”

Best Mountaineering History book was won by Mount Everest: The Reconnaissance 1935 — The Forgotten Adventure by Tony Astil this was reviewed at UKClimbing.com by Peter Seward last August. You can read Peter's review here.
