New Llanberis Climbers' Pub and Campsite

© Mick Ryan
The healthy North Wales climbing scene has another arrow in its quiver. If all the access work, rebolting of the slate, a new guidebook, new energy in the BMC Area meetings wasn't enough there is now a new "local' pub and campsite just outside Llanberis at Cwm-y-glo.

The Snowdonia Inn or Y Fricsan Pub/Campsite has been bought by local climbers Ted Sylvester and Sue Harwood (DMM Sue to some, as her day job is Sales at DMM).

See photo of the Y Fricsan and map here

This weekend sees the official opening, starting tonight with a whole host of bands, food and beer. Music includes: Cidfloss Corporation, Something Personal followed by Red Stripe, Noel, Merlin + Liam - mixing tunes, Bandacabana, and world class jazz from Huw, Maria & Zoot Warren.

The Y Fricsan is also the focal point for a North Wales bouldering meet, this weekend, organised by Chris Davis, see a report by Simon Panton at northwalesbouldering.com

The Y Fricsan is set on 8 acres of land and includes a large campground and bunkhouse accomodation. They serve excellent homemade food (I've sampled it - the tuna was great) and good beer. Sue said that they will be moving to almost exclusively organic and locally produced in the future. Both omnivores and vegetarians are catered for.

In other Llanberis food and drink news, V12 Outdoor have a fancy coffee machine in the shop, here's the discerning alpinist and extreme espresso drinker, Nick Bullock sampling some Lavazza -see photo-

It's just been taken over. I think there's quite a weekend planned, sadly I'm back in Sheffield. The star attraction at the pub is one of one our Pups, Baby Bella, now Carreg.

I've only been in there once and that night I must have sunk a good 10 pints before I got through the door of the Fricsan so I can barely remember it. Llanberis hasn't got too many nice pubs though, the Heights is now a bit of a youth club. I drink in the Vic bar or the Padarn lake if in llanberis.

I like the Double hop at the Vaynol. The Snowdonia Park Inn around at Waunfawr (has its own brewery) is meant to be good beer, and the Cwellyn at Rhydd Ddu is (was) pretty good.

As in the Prince of Wales, I thought it was closed down, looks it from the outside, but saw there were people in there drinking last week.

I enjoyed three nights in there last weekend. Decent, unassuming, down-to-earth boozer IMO.
