Dave Birkett Repeats Dave Pickford's Pembroke E9

Dave Birkett's scrambling phase didn't last long!

He has just repeated Dave Pickford's April 29th 2007 new route at St Govan's Head in Pembroke. The Brothers Karamazov E9 6c takes the groove of Pat Littlejohn's 1986 route Crimes of Passion (E6) at the Public Enemy Area. See an earlier UKClimbing.com news report about this route here and you can see the line of the route, with Dave Birkett on it, here

This means that Dave has now climbed E9 in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Perhaps a first.

Alastair Lee reports:

On Tuesday 5th June Dave B made a quick repeat of Dave Pickford's new E9 at Pembroke.

"Dave had a top rope of the route a couple of weeks ago and would have lead it if he'd had a peg, he was keen to return to lead it. Dave rapped in and placed the peg then gave the route another top rope. He then placed the rest of the gear on lead but downclimbed from the crux as the rock was a bit greasy. We waited for conditions to improve then with a bit of cloud cover Dave successfully lead the route, with Paddy as belayer and myself filming."

Alastair sent us some stills from his film capture, another one here, but will have video of Dave on the Brothers Karamazov E9 6c quite soon at www.posing productions.com

Hand placed peg I understand?

Pedantic i know, but technicaly speaking he has not climbed E9 in Scotland, he repeated Holdfast E9 7a (Glen nevis) with side runners.

No grade debates on the weekend please.

Yes disgraceful behaviour on the weekend, Dave will be addressing that comment very soon... Forgot to mention in the report that Dave came back the next day and lead the E7 6c ('War and Peace' I think) which starts from the break where 'The Brothers Karamazov' finishes and goes to the top. If you're interested in the style Dave rapped down and had a 'feel' of some of the moves on abseil then lead it clean, including downclimbing from the crux to remove his jumper.
