Simon Jacques reports on the forums that the Heeley Bank Community Centre home to the School Room boards has been saved after protests by community groups including climbers who started a petition and even abseiled down the building in protest.

As reported in the Sheffield Star by Polly Rippon on 28th July.

U-turn over plans to sell off community centre

Sheffield Council has made a U-turn over plans to sell a community centre in a listed building - after the scheme was opposed by people who said they hadn't been consulted. Following a protest the Grade II listed Heeley Bank Community Centre, home to artists' studios and an internationally-acclaimed rock-climbing training facility, has been taken off the market.

Campaigners against the closure put up a huge banner on the building and signed a petition to save the 130-year-old former school.

Climber Seb Grieve of the Save Heeley Bank Centre campaign said: “We have a meeting with council representatives next week so we will see what happens then. We are very pleased they have taken it off the market.”

Nice to hear that the Council actually listen to people sometimes.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't think its quite as simple and sorted as we'd like it to be...but at least it isn't closing instantly.

At least another year isn't it? The fact that they are prepared to sit down and discuss it is a positive in itself I reckon. And surprising given the usual outcome of situations like this.

Well done to the campaigners I say - it does work to protest in Sheffield it seems. Fingers X'd that there can be a resolution after negotiations. Cheers Si
