Martin Kocsis of the BMC tells us that 52 people came to sample the delights of Hawkshead Bitter (OG 1037, ABV 3.7% ) and Lakeland Gold ( OG 1043, ABV 4.4% ) as well as joining the stalwarts of the Lakes Area Meeting of old to inject some energy into the Cumbrian climbing community.
So what happened? Well I wasn't there. I got stuck in a motel in Nowheresville, USA, so missed the meeting but I have a copy of the minutes of the meeting in front of me.
There wasn't a long drawn out discussion about bolts, but I'm sure that will feature again sometime in the future (see a video of the last Lakes Area Meeting here to see what I mean) but a new team was elected and lots of ideas were discussed - go on then, there was some bolt discussion (see below).
In short:
- Al Phizacklea is the new chair.
- The Lakes Area Newsletter is being compiled by Carissa Lough, Ellie Fowler, Lois Sparling and Tim Fish. First issue out now.
- Ron Kenyon presented some bolt hangers he had removed from Helm Crag, where one route had suffered an attack of retrobolting by person/s unknown.
- Carissa Lough suggested a 'High Crag Weekend' next year - to encourage a return to the big high stuff. Unanimous approval for this from everyone and when I was in the Lakes Monday it was the talk of Ambleside (and the UKC forums).
- Steve Reid presented the latest FRCC Guidebook: the pocket-sized guide to Gable and Pillar. See Bill Birkett's UKClimbing.com review here.
- Ron Kenyon presented a report on the Lakes Bolt Fund. Money available from BMC, for rebolting projects.
- Cleaned Crag Database. Newly cleaned crags to be publicised on climbing websites.
Martin Kocsis, who is the Volunteers' Officer at the BMC and travels the UK facilitating volunteer efforts and Area Meetings said" the newly elected team is a strong and forward thinking one, working on your behalf and they need to know what works for you at such gatherings and what doesn't...don't be shy."
