Galen and Barbara Rowell killed in plane crash

World-renowned wilderness photographer and writer Galen Rowell, and his wife and business partner Barbara Cushman Rowell, died on Sunday morning in an airplane crash outside of Bishop, California.

Thr Rowells were passengers in a small privately owned plane which was being piloted by Tom Reid. Another passenger, Carol McAfee, was also killed in the crash. The accident is currently under investigation, but an eyewitness saw one of the wings dip suddenly just before landing, suggesting mechanical failure.

Galen Rowell produced 18 books of photos and text over his lifelong career, Barbara was also a photographer and the pair had recently moved their Mountain Light gallery to Bishop from San Francisco.
