The iPhone Finder App

The UKC Finder App is now available for iPhone and iPad. This app is essentially a mobile version of our 'Classifieds' section of the site and contains detailed listings to Climbing Walls, Outdoor Shops, Accommodation, Guides, Instructors, Outdoor Companies and Climbing Clubs all over the country, and abroad.

Using the UKC Finder App you can navigate to nearly 2000 different addresses, check opening times, find phone numbers and generally take the usefulness of UKC Classifieds with you wherever you go. It also has the GPS locator system to work out which addresses are nearest to you and give accurate navigation instructions to get there using the built in map functions of the iPhone.

The UKC Finder App is free to download and works on both the iPhone and the iPad. You can download it here.

Another great feature of the UKC Finder App is that it constantly updates - every time you use a wireless network with the app it will automatically fetch the latest data from the UKC Classifieds Database which doesn't incur any costs to you. You can also force update a certain listing if required when on a mobile network.

The iPad Finder App

This is the first UKC app that we have developed but more are in the pipeline. There will be a UKHillwalking version of the UKC Finder App, and we are also starting work on our first Rockfax Guidebook App which should be available this summer. This latter venture is particularly exciting since it has been much-requested over the last year or so, and was the most popular choice when we asked what UKC users would like us to develop in our survey of 2010. We are still deciding which guidebook we will be releasing as an iPhone app but it is likely to be one of the next print guidebooks.

At present we have no plans to produce versions for Android, Blackberry or Windows Mobile, but if the iPhone version proves popular then we will certainly look at the possibility of expanding the coverage.

Why did you aim this only at the iphone market when Blackberry has the largest share of the smartphone market? Is it beacuse of IT reasons and because you can use it with the ipad? E

Any plans for an Android app?
I find it so irritating that people neglect android! I know more people with an android phone and blackberry than I do with an iphone. Your not doing yourselves any favours ignoring the majority of users!

I have a 3Gs and it works fine on mine. I'll alert Stuart and see what he says, but it should work fine. Alan
