The Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) has produced a new free leaflet that offers useful condensed information on the key basics of avalanche avoidance in the hills.
Simply written and clearly presented in a ticklist style for easy use on the hill, Be Avalanche Aware is aimed at walkers, climbers and snowsports enthusiasts.
It kicks off with the thought provoking statistic that 90% of victims trigger their own avalanche, and then gives a systematic step by step guide to not getting caught out.
The booklet covers all aspects of a day out, from pre-trip planning to observations made as you go. At each stage in the trip the advice is broken down into segments covering weather and snow conditions, the terrain you're on and the state and ability of your party.
In addition to the written advice a few simple diagrams offer a good reminder of things like slope aspect and angle, terrain traps and the most important snow stability observations that avalanche forecasters include in their online avalanche information reports.
The various hazard levels used in SAIS reports (Low, Moderate, Considerable etc) are also explained.
Be Avalanche Aware can be downloaded as a pdf or picked up in print form in outdoor shops, ski centres and the National Outdoor Training Centres Plas y Brenin and Glenmore Lodge.
