As reported by Outside Online, two prisoners held in Pakistan's Gilgit Jail on trial for the 2013 Nanga Parbat massacre attempted escape in late February. One was killed by prison guards and the other - Habib-ur-Rehman - got free.

Rehman is a prime suspect in the killing of 10 climbers at the Nanga Parbat base camp back in 2013. He and around 20 other terrorists from the Tehrik-i-Taliban (TTP) of Pakistan massacred almost the entire multi-national base camp population in retaliation for an American drone strike.

Rehman was accompanied on his escape by another prisoner held over an unrelated crime.

The news of Rehman's escape comes just days after Pakistan announced the formation of a new High Altitude Police Unit specialising in security for visiting climbers.
