The 7th Climb Newcastle Annual Spring Boulder took place on Friday 8th May with a packed out centre witnessing one of the most exciting ASBOs to date.
During the day over 150 competitors battled with 30 problems set by the notorious Newcastle setting team of Andy Earl, Chris Graham and Suzan Dudink. Most come to the ASBO for the enjoyable problems (albeit with some stretching the definition of enjoyable!) and the evening's entertainment; the top 5 qualifying for the final which took place under the spotlights at 9pm.
Qualifying in the ladies final were no fewer than 4 previous ASBO winners in Karin Magog, Sid Graham, Joanne Quinan and Alison Monks. But it was Leah Crane, a recent convert to the mighty Climb Newcastle and new to the event, who dominated with 3 tops in 3 attempts to take the 2015 title.
The men's event was equally as tough, former champion Joe Wilson, local hero Adam Watson, Huddersfield strong man Nathan Phillips and youngster Aidan Roberts from Cumbria. After a full house of flashes on problem 1, Watson got furthest on number 2 to gain a crucial bonus hold. It wasn't over though, Nathan flashing the final problem to apply pressure on Adam, who in dramatic style completed at his first attempt to seal victory.
