The British Mountaineering Council have launched a crowdfunding campaign to rebolt the popular, BMC-owned Horseshoe Quarry in the Peak District, inviting climbers to pledge via their Crowdfunder page and 'Become a Horseshoe Hero.'

The target has been set at £15,000 to help towards the cost of materials (bolts, resin, maillons, rings) and of the rope access team who will install them. A variety of donation options and rewards are available, from covering the cost of one bolt to 'sponsoring' a chosen route or buying a t-shirt or a sculpture made up of old bolts and other equipment from the quarry.

Explaining the need for this latest campaign, the BMC wrote in an article:

'The vast majority of routes in the quarry rely on bolts for protection and the existing bolts are widely varying in vintage and quality, as well as having some excessively high first clips. The aim of the project is to re-equip all sport routes on BMC land to make the crag as safe and amenable a place to climb as is reasonably possible for all experience levels.'

According to the article, high quality stainless steel glue in bolts will be used for their strength and longevity and all lower offs will be standardised with a double bolt lower off. A maillon and ring on each bolt will allow for straightforward threading of ropes, whilst being easily replaceable.

Is this really the best way for the BMC to use resources?

When will this madness end? Securing outdoor climbing access and improving safety... outrageous, goes against everything the BMC stands for ;-) At least it isn't from general funds and will largely come from users of this popular venue.

I believe the BMC has spent a lot of money on Bramcrag quarry in the Lakes?

I agree... they should use the money to de-bolt the crag AND add some extra polish while they're at it.

Not what I was implying my friend.Of course improving safety is important, as as is securing access. Focusing funding and climbing traffic on one venue and feeding a "honeypot" when there are may others deserving of resources was my point.Fine if it's a start:)
