Queues on Everest as time runs out

With just a short time left before permits run out and the monsoon arrives, tension is high on Everest this spring. The 50th anniversary attracted more climbers to the mountain than ever before, but unsettled weather and high winds have meant that no teams have yet had a chance to try and summit.

One team reported that an estimated 400 climbers were in Camp 2 yesterday, with more above in Camps 3 and 4. The first team on the south side arrived in Camp 4 on the South Col over 48 hours ago, but have not been able to go further because of the strong winds. All teams on the south side are now above base camp except one. On the North side, Sherpas have fixed ropes above the First Step up to the summit ridge, some of them may summit later today.
