The two favourites are Cave's superbly written autobiographical Learning to Breathe (left), and Perrin's definitive biography of Don Whillans. Perrin won the prize back in 1985 with his outstanding biography of Menlove Edwards. The Chair of the judges for 2005 is Steve Dean, author of the Colin Kirkus biography, Hands of a Climber. The winner will be announced on Friday, 7 October, the prize of £2,000 commemorates the lives of Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker and is given to the author of "an original work which has made an outstanding contribution to mountain literature".
