It now looks more likely that Edinburgh Council will take over Ratho Climbing Centre. Since its opening in December 2003 the centre has been plagued with cash problems and threatened from closure since almost day one.
If the take over happens, it is likely that the centre will be managed by Edinburgh Leisure or a new council-owned company. A number of improvements are being planned. The council hopes to create a new bouldering wall and introduce a children's play barn area and two extra function rooms. The council is also working with British Waterways to provide tourism and leisure facilities for about 60 possible berths along the Union Canal outside the centre.
