Alan Hinkes accepts O.B.E

Alan Hinkes has been awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the New Years Honour list for his services to sport. Hinkes, 51, became the first Briton to climb the world's 14 highest peaks in May last year after successfully summitting Kangchenjunga. He joins Sir Chris Bonington, Sir John Hunt and Doug Scott OBE as just some of the famous mountaineers to be recognised by the Crown for their achievements and service.

Hinkes is also an honorary citizen of his home town, Northallerton.

Sorry, I don't agree. As much as I admire the guy, Alan was very lucky to be able to get paid / supported to live out his dreams. I see no difference between him and all those overpaid football / pop stars that receive awards (apart from the amounts they receive) I think 'honours' should be reserved for those who devote their lives to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. I'm talking of those people who don't court publicity all the time, but nevertheless make huge sacrifices for others. They are the real hero's.

you may not agree but your comments do not carry weight as you have no profile up to justify yourself to others. I do agree with you though that some others deserve some recognition, see the comments page on the BBC site.
