Three Peaks Africa: Margherita, Mt.Kenya, Kilimanjaro

Mention the Three Peaks and most think of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon: or if you are a Yorkshireman, Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside. But what about Margherita (5109m, Uganda), Mt.Kenya (5199m, Kenya) and Kilimanjaro (5895m, Tanzania) ?

Next month, four climbers, will attempt to climb Africa's three tallest summits in three weeks in aid of Comic Relief. Comic Relief has raised over £425 million for disadvantage people across the globe since it was formed in 1985.

This charity challenge has been organised by Steve Perry, 35 of Todmorden, Yorkshire, who in the winter of 2005 climbed all the Munros in a single, uninterrupted journey – entirely on foot.

Steve will be joined by Andrew Wilkinson, 30 also from Todmorden, Lorraine McCall, 41, of Edinburgh, and Dan Bailey, 32, based in Fife.

Lorraine was the first (and so far only) woman to complete a non-stop self-powered round of Scotland's Munros in summer 2005. Andrew is a mountaineer, biathlon and cross-country skier and Dan, an outdoor sports writer, is author of the much-acclaimed guidebook Scotland's Mountain Ridges (published by Cicerone Press, website).

Dan told us, “It seems apt that our mission takes us to the continent with which most of Comic Reliefs efforts are involved. Our success won't just be measured in metres climbed; it also depends on how much money we can raise. Every penny counts”

You can help by sponsoring the team at their website 3peaksafrica.co.uk and as a special incentive for readers of UKClimbing.com if you donate you will entered into a drawing for several prizes from the team's sponsors, RAB , Outdoor Designs, Pacerpole, Terra Nova, Extremities, Smart wool, Life Is Good and Superfeet.

Just put UKC by your name when you donate.
