Kilimanjaro Advice from the BMC

© John2
There has been an energetic debate between the RGS, BMC and those involved in taking people up Kilimanjaro. They've been looking at the high incidence of altitude related illness on the mountain from climbing it too fast. Many operators organising trips make the ascent up the standard Marangu route in 5 days without pre-acclimitisation. The BMC recommends that individuals considering ascending Kilimanjaro be aware that that a longer ascent (10 days would be optimal, based on purely medical grounds) or pre-acclimatisation (e.g. on nearby Mt Meru) will significantly reduce risk levels and make the experience more enjoyable. In addition the choice of a route other than the heavily used Marangu will have significant environmental benefits.
