UKC/OMM/FRA Mountain Rescue Donations approach £10,000

It's not just Barack Obama who can raise money to fund good causes using the internet.

After the media debacle that was this years Original Mountain Marathon, UKClimbing.com reader Nick - South Wales (UKC profile) set up a "justgiving" page to collect donations for the Lake District Mountain Rescue teams.

Articles on UKClimbing.com, the OMM and Fell Runner Association forums led to donations amassing at the speed of the gale force winds.

As the total swelled past the target Richard Warren of the Lake District Search & Mountain Rescue Association proposed a new goal of £12,000 amounting to £1,000 per Lake District Mountain Rescue team. As of Bonfire night £7,337 (close to £10,000 with gift aid) has been donated.

It's easy to donate - and gift aid is automatically added - easy peasy. Just click here: http://www.justgiving.com/theomm08-mrtdonation

And the FRA forum. Poor to see the BBC twist the gesture as a thank you to the rescue teams who saved 1000's of runners.

And outdoorsmagic.com - where despite the stereotypes sometimes bandied about on UKC, there seems to have been a refreshing absence of the "they really should have cancelled" brigade.
