Many readers of UKC will remember the late Derek Hersey. Derek, born in Manchester, served his apprenticeship in the Peak and Wales then moved to the USA where he became famous for his solo ascents, mainly in Colorado. He died from a fall whilst soloing the Steck-Salathe route in Yosemite on May 28, 1993.

Shamefacedly, I was completely unaware of him until I saw that part of 'Front Range Freaks' - never looked at that bit in the corner of Grindleford Cafe in the same way since... PP.
