The Army Mountaineering association (aka The AMA) was founded in 1957 following a proposal by Colonel Gerry Finch, Major Hugh Robertson and Second Lieutenant Chris Bonington.

The Army Sports Board at that time were very receptive to the emphasis placed on the training value of mountaineering; this emphasis continues today. Adventurous Training is seen as a very important element in the preparation of soldiers for the rigours of the modern operational environment.

The AMA has embraced all aspects of British mountaineering throughout its history and this legacy is reflected in the diverse activities of the Association's members today.

The AMA is the largest mountaineering club in the UK and is actively involved in every aspect of mountaineering from introducing Army Cadets to “the great outdoors” to ascending 8000m peaks. It is run by its members for its members and holds meets in the UK and Alps every year, in addition to a variety of challenging expeditions around the world.
