'The key thing at the heart of a great climbing wall are its people’ says Ged MacDomhnaill, the director of the Climbing Hangar, whose company runs one of the countries cutting edge climbing facilities in Liverpool and a second wall in Fulham, London that is establishing a rapidly growing reputation.

It was this people centered ethos that Ged looked to focus on with the launch of a new Climbing Hangar website. To articulate these ideas Ged collaborated with LWImages and their sister film production company Polished Project to create a range of imagery including four films telling the stories of some of the Climbing Hangar’s 3000 weekly visitors. "Working with PP was a delight!” says Ged, “They took a very artistic brief of 'show the facility through its people' and created media that distils much of what bouldering is to our current climbers but also speaks to those people who don't do it yet.

One of the most important requirements of these films was to reveal the fun, excitement and community of the Climbing Hangar experience to viewers who might have no previous experience of climbing. “Jargon free language, documentary style and a clear artistic vision meant that the films were attractive and clear to non climbing audiences, who reported that the films dismissed lots of the fears about trying bouldering for the first time.”

As well as films showcasing each of the Climbing Hangar’s walls, Polished Project together with Ged felt that further films were needed to tell two particularly strong success stories from the Climbing Hangar community. “Ged explained that on some evenings the number of female climbers outnumbered male climbers,” says Polished Project founder and director Lukasz Warzecha, ‘when we met Hati, Kay and Lynda and saw what dynamic characters they were we knew we had to tell the story of their climbing partnership and the thriving community of women climbers at the Climbing Hangar. One of the delights of making these films is finding out what makes each subject unique and then bringing out what is so special about each story

The second special film looked at another success at the Climbing Hangar - that of families climbing together and how often it was climbing children introducing their non-climbing parents into the sport. Polished Project have worked on four such climbing wall media campaigns and whilst each film has been distinctly different their approach is built around solid professional production values starting with the importance of story telling. “We like to plan and story board each film’s concept to develop each story with our clients well before we film,” explains Polished Project’s writer Ian Parnell, “It’s never a case of having a rigid cast-iron script, but in making sure we have a strong idea and structure to get the most out of what can often be a tight shooting schedule. Inevitably when you are working with normal people, particularly children, then you get all sorts of surprises. It’s these surprises that can often bring the sparkle to a film.”

From Ged’s perspective this planning “meant the film making process was concise and seamless. I got what I needed, on schedule, for the launch of our new website and I was well informed and supported throughout the process. It's nice working with people who take the time to understand your needs as a client and work super hard to realise your vision."
