uk.rec.climbing - The Highs and Lows: Yanks

We seem to have it in for Americans on this group. Is it jealousy 'cos they've got El Cap? Or is it because they were late for the war? Who knows, here's a couple of mild examples...

Jeb of aol.com wanted a simple bit of information, just the sort of thing UseNet is good at:

I am a student in the u.s. and i will be moveing to london for the summer to work. My university offers a program that helps students find a place to stay and a job. I have never been to london and am not sure about moveing and or climbing near london.. Is there any climbing area near london and how far is sheffield from london? Any information would be greatly appriciated. Also if anyone lives near london and needs some summer help, please let me know.

thanks again,

Jeb

Reasonable enough, so the ever helpful Pete came up with the goods:

Sheffield is around 15 miles South east of London. London is surrounded on all side by huge mountain ranges with loads of great climbing. By the way did you know that Londoners have an excellent sense of humour and a deep love for Americans, if you want to make friend quickly try going to any pub in the Brixton area and after ordering a drink (I recommend babycham a little known English drink for hard climber types) shout at the top of your voice "The South will raise again" (to complete the picture wear a Newt Gringich button). Or go to pubs in the East End of London and lecture them on how America won the second World War. Mind you, I don't know why I bother with such information as Americans being such sensitive souls normally do such things automatically.

I'm an old bumbley, and proud of it!

hmmm...

+LOL+ :) Pete, now that's mean!

Simes.

BTW who's Newt Gringich?

Undeterred, jeb ploughed onwards...

if a person lives in london, what is the best way to get to shefield? do you need a car? in you take the train, how do you get to the crags once you get off the train. Also, one person told me sheffield was 15 miles from london and another person told me it was 200. please some one tell me long it takes a person living in london to get to the cliffs around sheffield.

thanks a million

Charles to the rescue...

" if a person lives in london, what is the best way to get to shefield?"

I generally reckon that if the purpose is climbing, then go to a good climbing wall in London and either make friends, or put up a notice asking for lifts. Of these, the former is better since you're more likely to meet people your standard.

As to how you find a wall: you look on the UK Climbing pages.

"do you need a car? in you take the train, how do you get to the crags once you get off the train."

We have other wheeled objects called "buses", which go nearer. And then we have objects on the ends of our legs called "feet", which we employ to a greater or lesser extent.

" Also, one person told me sheffield was 15 miles from london and another person told me it was 200. please some one tell me long it takes a person living in london to get to the cliffs around sheffield."

Too long when the sun's out, not long enough when it's raining for the rain to stop. An atlas can help with the other question. Available in bookshops. We have those here too. They might, who knows, even be available on the Net.

It's this kind of persistence which tamed the west...

does anyone out there that lives in london make trips to sheffield to climb regularly? if so please email me, thanks

Enjoy your stay, jeb

And then Mr/Ms [email protected] inadvertently posted to the wrong group. Ye gods, this aol.com's value for money isn't it? Never a dull moment...

Does anyone know the condition of the ice climbing in New Hampshire. I'm thinking of going up on the weekend of April 6th and 7th. What's good?

errrrmm.........

I don't know about new hampshire, but the conditions in the old one aren't too hot (if you get my drift) at the moment - haven't been up to much since the last ice age.

john

Can't help on this but I think a lot of Scotland is pretty good just now - I believe there are cheap flights to Glasgow from most US airports - you'd be most welcome!

James

Bugger me - after all these years
I never knew there was any ice climbing in the new towns of Hampshire
