I'm looking for gearing advice for the Snowdon Horseshoe

http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/need_to_read/2012/09/13/dangerous-snowdonia...

I think the level section to the pinnacles would be fine on a 26 cassette but there's a bit of a step on the north ridge that may warrant something bigger?

And how do scrambling grades match up with TdF climbing grades?

Grade 1 = HC
Grade 2 = MD (mon Dieu) etc

Sod the gearing - I'd be practicing balance and bunny-hopping skills!

In reply to AlunP: I must admit that since humans managed to opt out of natural selection, mistakes like this are a welcome breath of fresh air for the eejits that will see this on the map - decide to do it and then despite all the terrain suggesting otherwise, decide to carry on regardless.

Ah brilliant - another opportunity to trot out the usual guff that follows any question about gearing!

"Twenty six! Twenty six! Pah! When I was a lad I was considerably harder than you. I rode up everything with a 12-18. I once fitted a 21, but that was for a club ride up Engineer's Slab. Didn't even have to get oujt of the saddle . . . . ad nauseum "

The chap who did the Aonach Eagach with his bike might be able to help:

I think Ian Munro of this parish has done it? He might give some advice. I wouldn't think you'd need a triple though.

In reply to AlunP: My memory is a bit fuzzy but I'm sure I did it in the late 80s on a Raleigh Grifter.
