Ive got a bike frame/fork that can take 26" or 650b wheels, do you think raising the bike by an inch (0.5" wheel radius + 0.5"  fatter tyres) would have any negative aspects (other than standover height) compared to the benefits of larger diameter wheels?

You'll have the same BB drop which I've always found more important than BB height so I'd be happy with it.

I've always fancied being higher.

I have a custom 29+ that rides a bit higher than conventional MTB - clears log jumps, rides deeper ruts avoids pedal strike better - better for riding 'natural' terrain

Advantage: You might be able to pedal when cornering at speed?

Depends on the type of riding you are doing, up an inch is quite a lot.

If your off to carve up a bike park its not the ideal set up but out ride day to day trails won't really matter. Lower BB generally will handle better, but with that comes pedal strikes etc.
